This weekend I attended a workshop all about fund-raising. It was pretty fantastic and amazing. Now, all I need to do is get over my fear factor. People will say yes and people will say no, and it is nothing personal.
I'm also getting into researching sleeping bags and cycling with diabetes. I found some pretty useful things on the Bicycling Magazine website. Once you start looking, you'll find that there are more people out there dealing with things very similar to yourself. One particularly fascinating article is titled "1 Sweet Ride" by Jeremy Katz. I recently reached the $1000 mark, right before the long weekend, so I am still waiting to be contacted by the bike shop. Last night I put a "wanted to buy bike trainer" ad on craigslist, and today got a reply. That was fast! There's a furniture store over in Pittsfield that has 2. I hope to get over there soon.

Entry 1: My discovery of Bike and Build
Nobody I know has participated in any Bike and Build events, and only one or two had maybe heard of it, so how did I hear about it?
Many people ask that question, so here's my story:
Last year while cooking at the Rowe Camp and Conference Center one weekend, I was talking with the Lead Cook about a desire I had to travel while doing something service oriented. She mentioned that her son had participated in WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). So I checked the website out, and it looked neat, but was not quite what I was looking for, so I looked at the links page and clicked on voluntourism.org. On that page there was an article about Bike and Build, which I read and realized that this is what I was looking for. I spent about fifteen minutes thinking how cool Bike and Build sounded, then I sent an email inquiring how to get involved. Since it was March/April at that time, I knew I had to wait for the next round of trips. Now here I am, counting down the days until I drive away from my safe little town and head toward Portsmouth, NH where a summer adventure will begin.
In addition, I do have to mention that I was also inspired by my friend Maya D., who rode across the country with her friend Rose in the summer of 2006 for GreenPeace. Just the two of them. Prior to that, I don't think I had ever entertained the thought of bicycling across the country.
And that, my friends, is how I found Bike and Build.
